A practical approach to teacher development

PCELT blends theory and practice through experiential learning, critical thinking and creative problem solving. Small cohorts are designed for needs-based, individualized attention, with a regional model of 12 participants. Teachers develop techniques for learner-centered, interactive classrooms and apply them to real teaching situations.

  • Interactive workshops and guided lesson planning
  • Observed practice teaching with real students
  • Continuous feedback from trainers and peers
  • Reflection on teaching and a professional development plan to implement after the course

What participants learn

The curriculum combines the fundamentals of effective English language teaching with adaptable modules for public and private, urban and rural, traditional and alternative classrooms, including settings with different levels of resources.

  • Language assessment and materials adaptation, evaluation and development
  • Teaching young learners and English for specific purposes
  • Online classroom resources and computer-based language learning
  • Classroom research and learner case studies
  • Emerging trends in international communication, youth development, social media, economic opportunity and education reform
  • Professional competence, classroom confidence and connections with fellow English teachers

Practice and reflection

From training to the classroom

Participants teach real students, receive constructive feedback and reflect on how to adapt their methods to their own teaching context. Professional development continues through the plan they prepare during the course.

Program partnership

Amideast and World Learning/SIT Graduate Institute bring regional classroom experience and teacher-education expertise to the program.

Delivery and trainers

The 120-hour program is designed for intensive (four weeks), semi-intensive (10 to 12 weeks) or extended (16 weeks or more) delivery. These are program design options, not confirmed local schedules. Highly qualified, PCELT-certified trainers teach the course and observe classroom practice. Confirm the format, location and attendance schedule with the relevant country team.

Assessment and certification

The source program is described as an internationally recognized TESOL certificate developed by Amideast and World Learning/SIT Graduate Institute. The source pages refer to American-accredited certification. Successful completion of the full program is assessed throughout the course, rather than through a published standalone exam.

  • Ongoing participation and lesson planning
  • Observed practice teaching
  • Teacher reflection assignments
  • Learner case studies and teacher portfolios
  • The PCELT certificate is permanent, with lifetime validity
