After a year of guided study and a two-week international learning seminar, a group of community college faculty returned to their classrooms with new global perspectives and practical ideas for their students.
The experience was part of a customized professional development partnership designed to deepen global learning across disciplines. Faculty and staff met regularly through virtual modules before traveling together for an intensive seminar shaped around education, culture, migration, history, and community life.
Learning that travels back to the classroom
The program combined academic discussion with visits to universities, community organizations, cultural institutions, and local classrooms. Those encounters gave participants direct examples they could connect to courses in the humanities, social sciences, technology, and language learning.
“The seminar gave our faculty a richer context for their teaching and helped them turn international learning into something immediate and useful for students.”Program participant
Several faculty members began redesigning assignments while the seminar was still underway. One created an interactive digital map connecting course themes with places and people encountered during the program. Another developed new comparisons between language communities, migration, and identity.
A collaborative model
Eight synchronous virtual modules prepared participants for the field seminar and helped the group establish shared questions before traveling. During the in-person program, discussions with educators and community leaders added nuance to those questions and encouraged participants to test assumptions.

Collaborative sessions connected academic themes with practical classroom applications.
The impact continues
Back on campus, participants are sharing materials with colleagues and integrating new case studies, media, and perspectives into their courses. The partnership shows how sustained preparation, thoughtful travel, and structured reflection can help an international experience reach far beyond the people who took part.
